interviewed nra's president david keene. >>> it is one week since the newtown, connecticut, school shooting which changed the gun control debate. short time ago americans paused to honor the 20 children and 6 women who were killed in that massacre. bell toll [ bell tolling ] church bells rang 26 times as newtown officials and residents stood with connecticut governor dan malloy. churches also rang their bells in washington and other cities. on thursday services were held for six of the people killed inside sandy hook elementary school. there was also a funeral in new hampshire for nancy lanza, the mother and first victim of gunman adam lanza. seth doane is in newtown where more funerals for the victims will be held this morning. >> reporter: good morning, norah and charlie and good morning to our viewers in the west. across the country, governors and mayors have called for a special day of mourning and a moment of silence to mark one week since this tragedy. >> it sucks. there's no reason for us to be here tonight. >> reporter: expressions of disbelief and grief echo

to 20 young people in flutown, connecticut. has it changed anything here? specifically i want to get to the gundebate but generalla sense of, look, we've got to pull together on some things here. we've got to get beyond our dysfunction. >> i think people feel differently about this one than most of the other terrible tragedies we've seen. with the little children, the awfulness of it. whether that endures. whether that really means there will be action on-- i'm not sure, charlie. but i do think there is more of a shock. there is more of a sense. and youalk to rublins and democrats. and i think that one thing that i think the president did skillfully was putting joe biden in charge of doing something about this. because biden understands these issues. he's been the chairman of the judiciary committee. he understands it's not just guns. that's a big part of it. but it's also hollywood, video games, cultural issues. and you've got to have cops. and i think what they are going to look for, republicans and cops and race car drivers and athletes and people like that. >> rose: weigh in on t

traffic trying to get back to the capitol for a vigil that we were having for the newtown, connecticut atrocity, i kept remembering the words "even though i walk through the valley of the shadow of death, i will fear no evil for you are with me." i found myself asking in the car how was it that he was able to walk so confidently through the valley of the shadows of death? i began to speculate. i thought, perhaps, he could do it because he had been in that valley before. i had heard the story of the silver dollar that saved his life. he had two silver dollars in his pocket. he had been in the valley of shadows before, walking through, not jogging or running, with the temperament, he could walk through. i said there has to be more than that. i continued to drive, and i thought, perhaps, he was able to walk so confidently into the valley of the shadows because he knew there was light in that valley. you can't have shadows without light. i remembered his prayer breakfast speech, only a few weeks ago, and how he talked about his faith roots, and i knew that he had illumination in the valley
